Description
Samara Game Reserve
Location & setting
- The reserve is situated in the semi-desert region of the Great Karoo in the Eastern Cape, near Graaff‑Reinet.
- It covers around 67,000 acres (≈27,000 ha) of rewilded landscape combining plains, plateaus, mountain grasslands, and river systems.
- It is malaria-free.
Wildlife & experiences
- Samara is home to a wide variety of wildlife: the “Big Five” (including both black & white rhino), cheetah (with tracking on foot available), giraffe, Cape mountain zebra, and many other arid-adapted species.
- Game drives depart early morning and late afternoon to take advantage of key wildlife activity times.
- The landscape is unique: at the junction of five vegetation biomes, which creates diversity of habitat.
Accommodation & rates
- There are luxury lodges on the property, with different levels of inclusion.
- For example: rates from about R20230 per person sharing (Full Board Plus) for one of the lodges for 2025-26.
- The style emphasizes “slow safari” and meaningful connection with the land rather than rushed game-ticking.
Why it’s special
- Rewilding & conservation: Samara has transformed former livestock-farmland into a restored wilderness, reintroducing species and rehabilitating land.
- Low guest-to-land ratio: Fewer guests relative to the size of the reserve means a more intimate experience.
- Malaria-free safari: Important for travellers who prefer avoiding malaria zones.
- Unique landscape: Being in the Karoo means different scenery compared to classic savannah safari lodges.
Things to keep in mind
- Because of its remote and large scale nature, logistics (getting there) matter. It’s about 2.5 hours by road from the coast / Port Elizabeth region.
- The style is luxury safari, so the pricing is higher than simple game-lodge options.
- The Karoo environment might be more sparse than lush jungle or dense forest safari settings — if you expect classic dense bush, note the difference.
- For peak wildlife sightings (especially elusive species) you still need to spend time and go out on drives/walks — you won’t just rely on “seeing everything from the lodge.”
